During the day Milford Sound can be a bustling and sometimes crazy place but once all the visitors leave, you are left immersed in the raggedness of the Fiordland National Park. This is the best time to explore and learn why Milford is known as the 8th wonder of the world.
Most people that live in Milford Sound call the Day Cruise vessels their office. Their typical roster is 10 days on, four days off with work starting between 6–8am and finishing between 5–7pm.

If you are lucky enough to live in Milford Sound and work on the Day Cruise vessels you will most likely be based in the Milford Sound Village. The Village has hostel style accommodation for workers which is subsidised by Real Journeys. All food is provided. You'll generally make your own breakfast and dinner, with lunch provided on the vessels.
Living in Milford is for anyone who loves to make the most of their days off. Whether it be exploring the end of the famous Milford Track, getting out on the water kayaking or even jumping in, Milford is what you make it!

How do I get to work if I live in the Milford Village?
The Milford Village is only a 15 minute walk from the Milford Boat Terminal. There is also a shuttle bus that goes to and from the Village to the Terminal throughout the day for staff to get to and from work.
How do I get to work if I work on an Overnight vessel in Milford Sound?
A coach is provided that will take you to and from Te Anau and Milford Sound when your shift starts and finishes.
Is there cell phone reception and internet in Milford Sound?
There is no cell phone reception in MIlford Sound but there is limited internet available at the village for purchase if you live in Milford Sound.

There, you can select the types of jobs you are interested in, attach an electronic copy of your CV, and you will then automatically be notified of new vacancies as they arise via email. You can then apply for positions online as well.
How long would I have a job for?
Real Journeys summer season starts in August /September each year, we start recruiting for our seasonal positions in June/July.
The season generally runs from August through to April/May each year. Rosters and days of work will depend on what position you apply for.
Paid training will commence for overnight positions in August, with most other positions training will commence in September.
How do I learn what is expected of me on the job?
Your position description will provide you with everything you need to know about your job expectations. We also encourage you to ask us questions during the interview process.
We also have a comprehensive on boarding and induction programme that will prepare you for your remarkable season with Real Journeys. We will provide you with specific training to give you the best possible start with us.
We will offer continued support throughout the entire season.
You must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand. You will be required to verify your eligibility to work in New Zealand by providing us with a valid work visa and a copy of your passport.
Real Journeys does not apply for work visas for our seasonal positions.
There are some exceptions, where we do apply for work visas for specialise roles: Stoker/Boiler, Language Guides, etc.
Should I apply for a position if my visa is going to expire half way through the season?
No, we will only consider applications from people that have a valid visa for the entirety of the season.
Can I start the season late?
It is our preference to hire people that are able to attend our pre-season training sessions, however we understand that this is not always possible and there are often time where we may require additional staffing after the season has commenced.
If you are unable to start the season on time, please make this clear in your application when you are applying on line.
How do I apply?

If you hold a work visa, then you can also attach a copy of your Visa and passport to your application.
Once you have registered and applied online you will receive email confirmation.
Why can’t I see the position I want to apply for?
The 3 main reasons that you may not be able to see the vacancy online are:
The vacancy has closed off and you have missed the closing deadline
In some circumstances we have a high return rate from previous season employees; therefore we do not need to advertise these positions
We have a strong emphasis on developing our internal staff member, so it maybe a possibility that we have recruited the position internally
Can I train to become more qualified while I work?
Yes absolutely, depending on your job, we offer on job training for most of our seasonal roles.
Everyone that works in New Zealand is required to pay tax. To do this you will need an Inland Revenue Tax number. To apply for your tax number please visit the IRD website and apply for your tax number prior to commencing employment. www.ird.govt.nz
Please note that you will need to be in the country when you apply for your tax number and it can take up to 10 working days.
Will I be provided with a uniform and the right gear to do my job?
Yes all employees that are required to work with the public will be provided with a uniform.
You will be issued with your uniform before your first day of work. When you are issued your uniform you will be required to sign a document acknowledging receipt. We will replace items through wear and tear, but you are liable for replacement of goods.
What will I be paid and how often?
Your pay will be dependent on the position you are in, all our roles are in line with New Zealand Labour legislation. Our pay cycle is fortnightly (every 2 weeks) and funds are available on Wednesday night.
You will need a NZ Bank account; we are unable to pay your wages into a foreign account.
What happens after I have submitted my application?
Within 2 weeks of the vacancy closing we will be in touch to let you know the status of your application.
If I am successful with my application… what next?
If you are offered a position, you will be sent an employment pack, where you will be required to complete and sign:

IRD Tax form (IR 330)
Code of conduct
Kiwi saver forms (if a NZ Resident/citizen)
Do I get a discount on any of Real Journeys Products?
Yes, once you have been inducted into the organisation, you will be issued a Real Rewards staff ID card, which will enable you to book RJ product trips (including Cardrona Alpine Lifts) at discounted rates.
Do I receive any other benefits working at Real Journeys?
Yes, we also provide you with an employee benefits card; this will give you national and local discounts on personal purchases from some top suppliers!
