Launch Masters - Stewart Island Experience

Date: 12 June 2019

How do you fancy the island life, being at the helm hosting passengers to New Zealand's hidden treasure?

We have amazing opportunities on offer for Launch Masters that have a passion for people, the sea and the outdoors and would like to join our exceptional Stewart Island Experience team.

We are looking for qualified Launch Masters to be based in either Bluff or on the Island itself. We have a role available transporting guests across the ever-changing and challenging strait daily and one skippering a smaller vessel for our Wild Kiwi Encounter. It is likely these roles will be full time and fixed term, we have one to start immediately and others for the summer season, but get in touch with us if it sounds like you as we may have flexible options.

Both positions are busy and dynamic, requiring strong leadership, interpersonal communication and excellent ship handling abilities as weather can be challenging across the Foveaux Strait and as a part of the Wild Kiwi Encounter Excursion you will be operating the vessel at night.

As a Real Journeys Launch Master you have complete responsibility for vessel, crew and passengers and for ensuring the vessel is operated within legislative requirements and guidelines at all times. Each sailing there will be a dedicated Crew / Nature Guide and you may at times undertake Crew duties also as a part of your role.

Key responsibilities of this role are:

  • Ensuring the safety of all staff, customers, contractors and general public on every vessel under your command;
  • Capable of managing emergency situations on vessels under their command;
  • Can efficiently implement the Real Journeys safety management system in their role as Master;
  • Ensuring that the highest standards of customer service are maintained at all times;
  • Providing high quality interpretation and commentary for all product voyages;
  • Providing effective leadership, mentoring and training for all vessel crew.

The successful applicant will have (as minimum certification):

  • Either:
    • An Inshore Launch Master or Skipper Restricted Limits (<24m Passenger endorsed & high-speed endorsement) certificate of competency
    • An Inshore Launch Master or Skipper Restricted Limits (<24m Passenger endorsed) certificate of competency
  • Hold a full NZ Drivers Licence

The successful applicant will be put through a full induction, training and clearance process to cover the vessels and operation and provide you with all you need to jump into your new role in one of the most unique work environments and lifestyles in New Zealand.  Those seeking additional information should contact our Chief Launch Master - Milford Sound/Stewart Island Experience, Brent Marshall on
