Launch Master - Te Anau

Real Journeys are on the hunt for a qualified Launch Master for our Te Anau operation.  This role is focussed on delivering remarkable daily cruises across New Zealand's second largest lake, Lake Te Anau to the Glowworm Caves complex. Not only do we need someone who knows their way around a wheelhouse, but we are looking for someone that is no stranger to delivering excellent customer service and is able to effectively contribute to the overall customer experience.

Life in this position is busy and dynamic, requiring strong leadership, interpersonal communication and excellent ship handling abilities as weather in Fiordland can be challenging and as a part of the roster pattern you will be operating the vessel at night.

As a Real Journeys Launch Master you have complete responsibility for a 'high speed' catamaran, 23m long with twin caterpillar engines, whilst also ensuring safety of crew and passengers and for ensuring the vessel is operated within legislative requirements and Real Journeys guidelines at all times.  

This is a full time, fixed term position starting in August/September 2019 through until April, 2020. You will be working on a 5 days on, 2 days off roster over extended hours of operation including regular evenings in a great team environment with a sensational backdrop!

Key responsibilities for this role are:

  • Ensuring the safety of all staff, customers, contractors and general public on the vessel under your command;
  • Managing emergency situations on the vessel under your command;
  • Implement the Real Journeys safety management system in your role as Master;
  • Ensuring that the highest standards of customer service are maintained at all times;
  • Providing high quality interpretation and commentary during cruises;
  • Providing effective leadership, mentoring and training for all vessel crew.

Successful applicants will have (as minimum certification):

  • Inshore Launch Master or Skipper Restricted Limits (<24m Passenger endorsed) certificate of competency;
  • High Speed endorsement is preferred but not mandatory;
  • Full NZ Drivers Licence.
